Ole H Petersena, Carl CH Petersen – Cell Calcium 88 (2020) 102209
Sir Michael Berridge, a giant in the fields of physiology and biochemistry,
passed away on 13th February 2020. Mike, as he was universally
known, discovered one of the most important regulatory mechanisms
in animal cells, namely the ubiquitous Ca2+ releasing effect of
the small water-soluble molecule inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3),
which is generated by receptor-mediated activation of phospholipase C
(PLC) resulting in the breakdown of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate
(PIP2). The sensational discovery of IP3 as the ubiquitous releaser
of Ca2+ from intracellular stores was published in Nature in 1983. (…)
